1.   Poetics

Try to learn the basics of poetics. If you do not have any formal education. Then don’t lose hope. This is a digital world. Search about different rules to write a poem. Learn them and then practice those rules in your poems. Additionally, there are many books available on poetry that would help you to understand the definitions and use of different terms of poem e.g. trochee.

2.   Writing

It is one of the most important skills you should work on for improving your writing. You should take a pen and write whatever comes in your mind. Keep a journal with you every time. When you read or listen to a good verse note it down and find the poet’s technicalities. Try to bring those qualities in yourself as well. Explore yourself by writing freely. Creative writing daily will polish your writing style slowly yet efficiently. It is a time taking exercise but you must do it regularly to improve your expression.

3.   Reading

The dilemma of many young and new writers is that they do not read books, especially poetry. Do not just read poetry from your textbooks. Moreover, do not just try to find mainstream poems. Search! Find what attracts you in poetry and what doesn’t. Make your manual or virtual bookshelf. When you will become able to find the poetry which attracts you the most then you will fall in love with it. The verse would start to make sense to you. After reading a lot then you will begin to differentiate between the poetry of good and bad qualities. It is a basic requirement to make yourself accustomed to poetry.

4.   Listening

Like reading and writing, listening to poetry on television and radio also help to improve your comprehension of poetry. It will ultimately make you a pro in poetry as you can easily grasp the concept of a poem by just listening.

5.   Practice

Poetry is indeed free writing. However, there is a difference in arranging your words in some manner or just writing any word that comes into your mind. Take care of the rhymes. Do not put words randomly that don’t make any sense. When you become familiar with all the techniques then practice them as much as you can. This is a key to success.

TopicSelection

A good topic always attracts readers. Write on topics that are easier to understand. After taking full command of them, move towards difficult topics. Enhance your level of difficulty step by step. As an essay, the topic of a poem is also important.

7.   Feedback

If you want to publish your work then you should take feedback from others. Your poetry is a subjective product. However, it is very important to know about the views of your writings from the audience. Ask your friends to help you in this regard. Especially go to any teacher or mentor to find your shortcomings. It would also help you to understand the points on which you need to pay more attention.

8.   Revision

It is a secret ingredient for making your work exceptional. It is a basic point that when you are writing anything for the first time then there are chances of mistakes in your work. Unfortunately, immature writers think that they should not revise their work as this would be against the qualities of a good writer. In reality, a good writer always tends to find his own mistakes before anyone else does. They know that there is always room for improvement. And they allow themselves to make mistakes. By revising they can easily make amendments. This is how a good writer learns. For improving your creativity you should give yourself the freedom to make mistakes and then by revising your work you can learn and improve.
