Hi guys. Kratom is not for everyone. There are many different opinions about it out there and I’m going to do my best not only to cover the science behind kratom but also bring in my personal experiences.

Actually, kratom has been used in Thailand for centuries to treat everything from migraines, chronic pain, and anxiety to post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s actually looking more and more likely that science will find that it does indeed have these effects. I’ll be pulling from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the near future so stay tuned.

In this article I’ll be talking about the past decade or so of research on the topic as well as some of my own personal experiences with kratom. As with all drugs and medication there are a lot of side effects as well as some positives, but I’ll talk about what I’ve found and how I think kratom can help you have a better life.

What is Kratom?

Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) is a tropical tree in the coffee family that grows natively in Southeast Asia. Traditionally it was used as a stimulant, sedative and pain killer for workers and peasants who worked on coffee plantations. In modern times people have been using it for much the same reason, though our generations work isn’t quite as physically demanding. It can be taken in its natural form or even bought as an extract or capsule. The effects vary from person to person but one of the more common strains that you’ll hear about is Maeng Da, which is actually a Thai phrase meaning Pimp Grade Kratom.

How does it work?

Well, this is the interesting part. Currently kratom is being studied and it looks like at least two of its active compounds in Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-HMG) bind to your opioid receptors. This means kratom can cause many of the same effects as opiates—like morphine and heroin—without having as much of an impact on your breathing. This is why some people consider it a safer alternative to opiate drugs. However, just because it has a positive effect on one system doesn’t mean that there isn’t a cost later in another system.
